Kornacki Postgame Feature: Wolverines Search for Firepower
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team was shut out, 3-0, by Michigan State on Friday (Jan. 20) on the first night of a home-and-home series at Yost Ice Arena.
Michigan State took an early lead, getting a goal from Sam Saliba a little more than three minutes into the first period. The Wolverines tried to put together a comeback in the second period but came up empty on their three power-play opportunities.
The Spartans added to their lead, scoring a goal from Chris Knudson at the 13:25 mark of the second period. Michigan State tacked on a third goal midway through the third period (Connor Wood) to put the game out of reach.
Freshman goaltender Jack LaFontaine made 26 saves in net for the Wolverines. The Spartans held the shot advantage, 29-24.
Michigan returns to the ice tomorrow night (Saturday, Jan. 21) in East Lansing to conclude the weekend series with Michigan State. The Wolverines have won their last three matchups at Munn Ice Arena, with their last loss on March 8, 2014 (4-3). BTN will televise the contest.
