Michigan opened the scoring at the 6:33 mark of the opening period to take the early lead. As the Wolverines first power-play opportunity came to a close, senior defenseman Nolan De Jong took a shot from the point that made its way through a crowded front of the net for his third goal of the season.
The Spartans evened the score four minutes later as Logan Lambdin found an open Dylan Pavelek in front of the net at the 10:26 mark.
With 7:27 remaining in the second period, the Maize and Blue regained the lead on a deflection by senior forward Alex Kile on a shot from junior defenseman Sam Piazza from the point.
The hosts evened the score midway through the final period on a Patrick Khodorenko tip-in off a Sam Saliba shot.
Despite multiple chances for the Wolverines and a man-advantage for MSU, neither team found the back of the net in the five-minute overtime period.
Senior goaltender Zach Nagelvoort made 25 saves in net for the Wolverines while making two stops in the shootout. Michigan was 0-for-3 on power-play attempts and went 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Michigan returns to action in two weeks (Feb. 3-4) when it plays host to Ohio State for two games. The Maize and Blue went 1-1 last season against the Buckeyes at Yost Ice Arena and 1-1-0-1 overall.
