WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team, despite even shots and even corners, dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 7 Wake Forest in its ACC/Big Ten Challenge finale on Sunday (Aug. 28) at the Demon Deacons' Kentner Stadium.
Both of Wake Forest's goals came in a narrow 1:24 window late in the second half after defensive breakdowns in the Wolverine circle. Julie Grashoff netted the game-winner at the 56:33 mark, dribbling into the circle from the left side, pulling the defense out to challenge and chipping a bouncing shot into the opposite corner. Emily Conroe scored on Wake's next push into the circle, at 57:57, but it came with some controversy when it appeared as though Wake's Nicole Pluta carried the ball over the goal line. Instead, she fed a goal-mouth pass to Conroe, who tapped it into the open cage.
Michigan was not without its opportunities throughout the contest. Senior Sina Lampe and freshman Bree Bednarski led the Wolverines with two shots apiece; Lampe put a corner shot into the net midway through the first half and despite it appearing to have been deflected in front, the shot was deemed too high and the goal waved off.
The Wolverines also had a couple of near-misses during a five-minute yellow card to junior Katie Trombetta, in which U-M dominated play with two corners and three shots, early in the second half. Sophomore Leah Cardarelli made a good attempt on a drag flick, but Wake goalkeeper Cat O'Connor got her stick on it to knock it away.
Shots (7-7) and corners (4-4) were both even in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Sam Swenson earned four saves -- two in each half -- while O'Connor earned two saves for the Demon Deacons.
The Wolverines will head west for a pair of non-conference slates in the Golden State next weekend. U-M will face Stanford at 2 p.m. PDT on Friday (Sept. 2) at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Palo Alto, California, before wrapping the road trip at noon PDT on Sunday (Sept. 4) against California at the Golden Bears' brand-new Underhill Field in Berkeley, California.
