PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned its second win over a ranked opponent in three games this season, scoring first and holding off a late rally attempt to defeat No. 11 Stanford, 2-1, on Friday afternoon (Sept. 2) at the Cardinal's Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
The Wolverines scored late in the first half and early in the second to build a 2-0 advantage, before Stanford cut the deficit midway through the second half.
Sophomore Emma Way netted Michigan's first goal -- her second game-winner this season -- at the 23:57 mark, driving a loose ball in front into the lower right corner of the Stanford cage. Freshman Kate Walker carried the ball into the circle from the 25, pushed it up into space, where sophomore Leah Cardarelli touched it past another Cardinal defender. With the ball rolling slowly toward the front, Way wound up and bounced a shot over goalkeeper Kelsey Bing's extended leg.
Senior Courtney Enge padded U-M's lead just minutes into the second half, at 37:24, on a redirection in front. Walker again set up the scoring play by carrying the ball up the right sideline into the defensive 25 and feeding the ball up into the corner for senior Sina Lampe, who rifled a hard centering pass into the circle. Enge got her stick on it to tip it high into the top shelf of the cage for her first goal of the season.
Stanford outshot the Wolverines, 9-6, and outcornered them, 7-2, scoring its lone goal on one of its four second-half penalty corners. Marissa Cicione took advantage of a broken play after a misplayed stop; the ball ping-ponged around the circle, pulling junior goalkeeper Sam Swenson out, and Cicione tapped it in at the 50:04 mark.
The Wolverines withstood several late Stanford opportunities, including two more penalty corners, and despite a two-minute disadvantage due to a late green card as well an extra Cardinal attacker for the final 3:41, Michigan successfully killed the clock, denying Stanford any shots over the last 12 minutes of the game.
Swenson earned four saves in the winning effort, including two in quick succession midway through the first half, stopping a low shot from the right side before batting away the high rebound effort as the ball kicked out to the front. The Cardinal's Bing stopped three of U-M's five shots on goal.
