
Michigan to Play Arizona State at NCAA Championship

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fresh off its sixth CWPA championship, the University of Michigan water polo team learned from the NCAA on Monday (May 2) that it will play Arizona State on Friday, May 13, at 5:15 p.m. PDT to start the NCAA Championship in Los Angeles.
U-M has a 5-9 record in the NCAA Championship, having finished fourth in 2002 (four teams), fifth in 2009 and sixth in 2005, 2008 and 2010. Michigan has never won its opening-round game in the NCAA Championship.
Automatic qualifiers were awarded to UC Santa Barbara (18-12) from the Big West, Michigan (29-6) from the CWPA, Wagner (29-9) from the MAAC, Southern California (23-0) from the MPSF, Whittier (26-7) from the SCIAC, UC San Diego (26-9) from the WWPA and San Diego State (17-16) from the Golden Coast Conference.
The at-large selections, all from the MPSF, included Stanford (21-5), which won the last two national championships, UCLA (24-4) and Arizona State (19-7).
Michigan has a 2-5 record in 2016 against the other nine teams in the NCAA field, including an 8-5 loss at ASU on March 19.
