EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team fell in a 3-0 hole before getting singles wins at No. 4 and No. 5 to cut the lead to 3-2, but Ohio State got a win at No. 1 as the Wolverines fell to the No. 5-ranked Buckeyes, 4-2, in the championship match of the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday afternoon (May 1) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Brienne Minor breezed to a 6-0 win at the top spot over the No. 8-ranked duo from OSU, winning their match in about 20 minutes.
Ohio State answered back with a 6-3 win at No. 3, turning the attention to the No. 2 court.
Sophomore Alex Najarian and freshman Kate Fahey recovered from a 2-0 hole to tie the match at 2-2. Neither team could hold serve for the next few games until the match was back on serve at 4-4. Both teams held serve the rest of the way, sending the match to a tiebreaker.
Michigan jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the breaker, but Ohio State answered with four straight points to take the match with a 7-5 win.
Michigan and Ohio State split the first sets, with U-M winning at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5.
OSU extended its lead to 3-0 with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 6.
With Ohio State looking to seal the match by serving up 5-4 at No. 1, senior Ronit Yurovsky broke to get back on serve at 5-5.
With Yurovsky staying on court, Najarian came through with Michigan's first point behind a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4.
Ruder-Hook cut Ohio State's lead to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Minor was entering a third set at No. 3, while Yurovsky was now in a tiebreaker at No. 1 for the second set. Yurovsky tied the breaker at 3-3 but lost the next four points as Ohio State took a 4-2 team win.
Michigan will await selection to the NCAA Tournament, which is announced on Tuesday (May 3) at 5 p.m.
