EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team took the doubles point and singles wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to shut out Purdue, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday afternoon (April 29) at the MSU Outdoor Courts.
The Wolverines took the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3. In their first match together since March 27, sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Brienne Minor rallied from a 2-0 hole for a 6-3 win at No. 1.
Michigan fell at the No. 3 spot, but took advantage of a late break at No. 2 to clinch the first point. Sophomore Alex Najarian and freshman Kate Fahey went up a break at 6-5 and served out the match in the ensuing game for a 7-5 victory.
Minor extended Michigan's lead to 2-0 over the Boilers with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3.
Najarian followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 to put Michigan on the brink of the victory.
Moments later, Ruder-Hook did the honors with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 5 for Michigan's fourth point.
No. 3 seed Michigan will face No. 2 seed Northwestern in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament tomorrow (Saturday, April 30) at 2 p.m.
