
Wolverines Shut Out Ball State in NCAA Opener

» Freshman Kate Fahey won her 30th singles match, joining classmate Brienne Minor in the 30-win club. It is only the second time Michigan has had a pair of freshmen win 30 matches.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and used a strong performance at the top of the singles lineup in a 4-0 win over Ball State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon (May 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Maize and Blue took the early advantage by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2.
Playing together for the first time this season, senior Ronit Yurovsky and sophomore Kara Hall jumped out to a 4-0 lead at No. 3 en route to a 6-1 win.
U-M's No. 2 duo of sophomore Alex Najarian and freshman Kate Fahey came through with a 6-2 win to give the Wolverines the 1-0 lead.
Michigan took control early in singles action, winning all six first sets.
It was a race to the finish as Yurovsky, Fahey and freshman Brienne Minor all were a game away from winning at the same time.
Minor came through first, delivering a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 2. Moments later, Fahey broke for a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 to put the Wolverines on the brink.
Yurovsky was Michigan's fourth point of the afternoon, winning four of the final five games on her court for a 6-0, 6-3 win.
Michigan will face No. 22 Kentucky tomorrow (Saturday, May 14) in the NCAA Tournament second round at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
