ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team came back from dropping the doubles point to win the first four singles matches off court in a 4-1 win over No. 22 Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon (May 14) at the Varsity Tennis Center. With the win, Michigan advances to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
Michigan fell behind early, dropping the doubles point. U-M won 6-3 at No. 2 but lost at 6-4 at No. 1 and 7-5 at No. 3 as Kentucky took the early lead.
The Wolverines quickly turned the tide in singles action, winning all six first sets.
Senior Ronit Yurovsky put Michigan's first point on the board with two completely different sets. She raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set for the 6-1 win before falling in a 3-0 hole to start the second. Yurovsky rallied from the early deficit, winning the final four games to grab a 6-4 victory.
Freshman Brienne Minor quickly followed with a match that was similar to Yurovsky's. Minor breezed to a 6-1 win in the first set but also fell in a 3-0 hole in the second set. Minor ripped off four straight games en route to a 6-4 second-set win for U-M's second point.
Sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook marched to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5, taking control early in each set to put Michigan on the brink.
Both sophomore Alex Najarian and freshman Kate Fahey were a game away on their respective courts at the same time. Najarian was the first to finish, winning a 7-6 (2), 6-4 match at No. 4. Najarian came back from trailing 4-1 in the first set to force the breaker. She fell behind 1-0 but reeled off six straight points en route to the 7-2 win. Najarian broke her opponent in the final game of the second set, sending Michigan to the next round.
U-M will face No. 7 seed Miami on Thursday (May 19) at noon CDT. The remainder of the tournament will be hosted by the University of Tulsa.
