
Yurovsky Sends Michigan Past Miami Into NCAA Quarterfinals

TULSA, Okla. -- Senior Ronit Yurovsky won 11 of her final 12 singles games to propel the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team past No. 7-ranked University of Miami, 4-3, in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 on Thursday afternoon (May 19) at Michael D. Case Tennis Center. With the win, Michigan advances to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
The Wolverines led 3-0 at one point, but Miami ripped off three straight wins to tie the match at 3-3.
With the team match down to the match at No. 1, Yurovsky was down a set and 4-1 in the second. The senior responded with the spotlight on her, winning five straight games to send the match to a third set.
Neither player could hold serve to start the third, with the two exchanging breaks through the first three games. Yurovsky held in her second service game, grabbing a 3-1 lead, and she kept the momentum going, winning the final three games for the 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1.
Michigan took an eventful doubles point that lasted nearly two hours and 30 minutes due to a rain delay.
U-M's No. 1 pair of sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Brienne Minor jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back in a 6-2 win. Miami evened the doubles ledger moments later with a 6-2 win of its own at No. 2, turning attention to court No. 3.
Yurovsky and sophomore Kara Hall raced out to a 4-1 edge and eventually took a 5-2 lead. Miami held in its ensuing game as rain started to lightly fall. Yurovsky went back to serve out the match at 5-3, but the Hurricanes converted on a deuce point to get back on serve at 5-4.
Following that game at 12:49 p.m. CDT, play was suspended. Play resumed at 2:10 p.m. with Miami serving at 4-5. Michigan won the game's first point, but Miami won the next two. Michigan tied the game at 30-all and won the next two points to break the Hurricanes for the 6-4 win, giving the Maize and Blue a 1-0 lead.
The rain followed, moving Michigan's match indoors before a singles game was ever played. U-M's match was suspended at 2:19 p.m., and play did not resume indoors until 4:50 p.m.
Miami took four first sets in singles, but U-M picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Freshman Kate Fahey made quick work of her opponent at No. 3, winning 6-2, 6-1. Fahey broke in the first game in each set, riding out the straight-set win. Ruder-Hook followed less than a minute later, delivering a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5. Michigan's lead swelled to 3-0 at that point.
Miami answered with wins at No. 2, No. 6 and a three-set win at No. 4 to set up the deciding match at No. 1.
With the win over her alma mater, Michigan head coach Ronni Bernstein picked up the 200th dual-meet victory of her nine-year Michigan career, improving to 200-52 (.794) with the Wolverines.
Michigan will face No. 15 seed Stanford on Saturday (May 21) in quarterfinal action. The match will begin at noon CDT.
