LINCOLN, Neb. -- Seniors Sierra Romero and Sierra Lawrence homered early and late to propel the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan softball team to a 4-1 decision against Nebraska on Saturday afternoon (April 9) in front of a record crowd of 2,302 at the Cornhuskers' Bowlin Stadium.
Romero provided the Wolverines a spark in the first inning, following a Lawrence leadoff single with a two-run bomb deep over the wall in right centerfield -- her 12th home run of the season and fourth in five games.
Lawrence headlined the Wolverine offense with three hits on the day -- none more clutch than a two-run blast of her own in the top of the seventh. The home run -- her sixth of the season -- gave Michigan some breathing room after the Cornhuskers cut the lead with a run scored in the previous inning.
Senior RHP Sara Driesenga (14-0) was solid in the start, allowing just two hits and four walks while striking out four Cornhuskers through five innings. Junior RHP Megan Betsa replaced her with two on and no outs in the sixth after a leadoff double from Nebraska third baseman MJ Knighten, who came home for the Huskers' lone run on a one-out single through the left side.
Both Husker base runners advanced on a wild pitch, but Betsa got out of the jam without additional damage, forcing a full-count groundout to end the inning. She retired Nebraska in order in the seventh on just eight pitches to earn her fourth save of the season.
