CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- In a weekend when Michigan great Shana Welch will be inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame, two of her single-season records fell on Friday (April 29) as the fifth-ranked University of Michigan water polo team won in convincing fashion over George Washington, 20-5, at Blodgett Pool.
With Welch in attendance, senior Ali Thomason broke her single-season goals record with an impressive five-goal performance. Thomason now has 87 goals to pass the previous mark of 84 set by Welch in 2005. Thomason finished the game with five goals, two assists and three steals in a game that was as massive as Fenway Park's Green Monster just miles away.
Thomason's five goals matched the most scored by a U-M player at the CWPA Championship (Kiki Golden in 2013 and Lauren Colton in 2010). Her seven points are a new Michigan best, breaking the previous mark of six.
Thomason hit two 200 milestones, scoring her 200th career goal and recording her 200th career steal. Among an exclusive club, she is just the fifth to score that many goals and just the fourth with 200 or more steals. She is now only four points shy of 300 for her career.
Welch's freshman goals record also fell to the wayside as CWPA Rookie of the Year Kim Johnson tallied two goals to give her 56 on the season, one more than Welch had in 2004.
Another milestone hit was senior Kelly Martin putting in her 100th career goal as Michigan had plenty to celebrate in the lopsided win.
Other standout performances included freshman Julia Sellers notching her second career hat trick, sophomore Caroline Anderson racking up two goals, three assists and three steals, junior Jamie Nolan scoring two goals to go with an assist, and freshman Amy Ridge swiping three steals.
The 20 goals are a Michigan record at the CWPA Championship, one more than the 19 against Salem International in 2003.
The Wolverines accomplished all of this after spending the morning on a trolley tour around Boston, stopping at historical sites such as Trinity Church.
The next challenge for Michigan will be No. 16 Princeton in the semifinals on Saturday (April 30) at 4:30 p.m. The Wolverines won the regular-season meeting by a score of 9-7 in Ann Arbor on April 9.
