ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won the doubles point and three singles matches in straight sets to shut out Nebraska, 4-0, on Sunday (April 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. With the win, Michigan completed the season with a 14-0 record at home to mark the first time the Wolverines have finished undefeated at the VTC.
Juniors Jathan Malik and Kevin Wong made quick work at the No. 2 doubles slot, racing out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 6-1 win.
Junior/sophomore Alex Knight and sophomore Runhao Hua continued to stay on serve at No. 1 as neither team could find the break it needed.
At the same time, freshmen Lubomir Cuba and Gabe Tishman rallied from a 3-0 hole to take a 5-3 lead at No. 3. Both teams held serve in their next service games as the U-M duo rallied for the 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.
The Wolverines won five first sets in singles action, with its only first-set loss coming on a deuce point at No. 1.
With a first set in hand, Wong won five straight games to start the second set to eventually take a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 for Michigan's second point.
Hua accounted for Michigan's third point, taking a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Hua took advantage of a late break in the first set for the 6-3 win and carried that momentum into the second in the win.
Malik was Michigan's fourth point, coming through in a second-set tiebreaker to clinch the win. Malik was on serve at 3-2 in the breaker before winning the next four points to win his match.
Sophomore Carter Lin was one game away from winning his match at No. 3, while junior/sophomore Davis Crocker was in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 6 when both matches were abandoned.
Michigan will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament after going 8-3 in conference action. U-M will play on Friday (April 29) to kick off the tournament, which will be hosted by Minnesota.
