Kornacki Postgame Feature: Big Ten Race Remains Tight as Home Stretch Nears
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Freshman forward Cooper Marody and junior forward Tyler Motte scored, but the sixth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team fell, 3-2, in overtime at Minnesota in a battle of the top two teams in the Big Ten on Friday night (Feb. 27) inside Mariucci Arena.
Minnesota's Hudson Fasching scored at 0:57 of overtime on a slap shot from straightaway following a neutral-zone turnover by the Wolverines.
Senior goaltender Steve Racine made 24 saves, while Minnesota's Eric Schierhorn stopped 23 shots in a game that was close throughout.
Trailing 2-1 late in the second period, Michigan rallied to tie the game on Motte's NCAA-leading 29th goal of the season.
Junior defenseman Michael Downing forced a turnover at the blueline with Minnesota skating up ice. Downing fed a pass down the left boards to freshman forward Kyle Connor.
Connor found Motte alone on the right wing with a beautiful saucer pass, and Motte hit the top corner with a one-timer at 17:19 to even the game heading into the third period.
Racine kept Michigan level with the Gophers with two excellent stops in the third period. With the Wolverines on the power play, Racine turned away a shorthanded breakaway chance for Leon Bristedt at 4:45.
Then at 14:42, Racine kicked out his left skate to make a sprawling stop on Tyler Sheehy all alone in front.
Fasching's game-winner came on a low one-timer over the pad of Racine.
Michigan took an early lead in the game, as Marody scored his first goal since Jan. 9 on a great play on the fore check by senior forward Justin Selman.
Selman intercepted a breakout pass through the middle by Gopher defenseman Jack Glover and found Marody skating alone down the left wing. Marody cut to his forehand and beat Schierhorn at 7:18 to put Michigan up 1-0.
The Gophers answered on a bad bounce for the Wolverines after a sustained shift the Michigan zone. Vinni Littieri's drive from straightaway deflected off the stick of sophomore Niko Porikos past Racine at 11:00 to even the game at 1-1.
Selman nearly gave Michigan the lead again on a shorthanded breakaway at the 14:00 mark, but Schierhorn made a pad stop and kicked away the rebound.
Minnesota took its first lead of the night on a fluke goal at 7:17 of the frame. Leon Bristedt skated through the neutral zone and flipped a bouncing puck on goal. The puck bounced over the glove of Racine and in, giving the Gophers a 2-1 lead.
