ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by a record-setting performance in the 200-yard individual medley by freshman Siobhán Haughey, the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving program moved into first place after the second day of the Big Ten Championships, held Thursday (Feb. 18) at Canham Natatorium. Haughey, the conference's top seed going into the meet, broke Big Ten, Big Ten Championships, University of Michigan and Canham Natatorium records, touching the wall at 1:54.97.
Haughey is the second U-M swimmer in as many years to win the event, following sophomore Clara Smiddy at last year's meet. Former Wolverine Margaret Kelly (2007-10) held the old Big Ten and U-M record (1:55.41), as well as the pool record (1:55.90), while Indiana's Allysa Vavra held the Big Ten Championships record (1:55.44). The 200-yard IM was the most fruitful event for Michigan on Thursday, with Smiddy following Haughey in fourth (1:57.26) and senior Marni Oldershaw finishing eighth (1:58.56). The Wolverines also had a trio of bonus finalists, all sophomores: Samantha Yeo in 17th (1:59.37), Carolyn McCann in 20th (2:00.53) and Emily Kopas in 21st (2:00.55). Together, the six swimmers combined for 98 team points.
"We're swimming well and having a lot of fun," said head coach Mike Bottom. "It's always great to see Michigan on the podium, and we had that happen several times tonight. Some of our underlings scored crucial points for us today, which was big. And how about our divers?"
On the one-meter springboard, five Michigan divers combined for 49 points. They were led by senior captain Sarah Kamstra, who finished fifth with a career-best score of 324.25. Senior Nicole Honey performed well in the consolation final, finishing 14th overall (287.00), while three others -- junior Keegan McCaffrey (19th, 267.60), junior Allie Murphy (21st, 265.60) and senior Elena Ghormley (24th, 258.50) -- all grabbed points in the bonus final.
"I view this as a team victory on one-meter," said diving coach Mike Hilde. "The success we had today, it was because of the efforts of everyone on the team. Sarah was outstanding. She's worked her butt off to get to this spot. As a coach, there's nothing better than seeing hard-working athletes get the success they deserve."
Freshman Yirong Bi set a Michigan record and claimed an NCAA A cut in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing second (4:35.69), going almost four seconds faster than she did in the morning. Bi matched Indiana's Haley Lips in a stroke-for-stroke fight for the entire race, but Lips edged her out at the end, setting Big Ten, Big Ten Championships and pool records (4:35.19). Sophomore Gillian Ryan, the old school record holder, finished tied for sixth (4:40.38). The Wolverines got another big time drop from freshman Becca Postoll, who moved up three spots and shaved a second-and-a-half off her preliminaries time to finish 11th (4:42.07).
Michigan front-loaded its 200-yard freestyle relay to open the meet and it paid off, as the foursome of Haughey, senior Ali DeLoof, Smiddy and junior Maddy Frost moved up four spots from its seed time to take third (1:29.12), gaining an NCAA A cut. All four members of the team received a second swim in an individual event later in the evening, but still went fast on the relay, with DeLoof leading the way (22.03).
DeLoof represented the Wolverines in the final of the 50-yard freestyle, finishing third (22.37). Frost (19th, 22.98) and DeLoof's younger sister, freshman Catie DeLoof (20th, 23.05), scored points in the bonus final.
