FLUSHING, N.Y. -- After winning three three-set matches in the doubles main draw of the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, seniors Kevin Wong and Jathan Malik of the University of Michigan men's tennis team fell in the semifinals Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Malik and Wong, who ripped through the ITA Midwest Regional Championships with five wins, kept their hot streak going to start the national tournament. The Wolverine duo combined for three consecutive three-set wins to reach the semifinals.
In the semifinals against Wake Forest's Christian Seraphim and Skander Mansouri, Wong and Malik took the first with a 6-3 win. The Wake Forest pair regrouped from there, taking a 7-5 second-set win and racing out to a big lead in the super tiebreaker to rally for the win.
Michigan will complete the fall season tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 6) with the final day of the Gopher Invitational at Minnesota. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m. CST.
