ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (5-3-1) hosts No. 4-ranked Boston University (4-3-1) to conclude their weekend series at Yost Ice Arena. Puck-drop is set for 5 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 12).
The Wolverines are coming off a 4-0 victory at the hands of BU last night (Friday, Nov. 11). Tony Calderone scored two goals in the win, while Hayden Lavigne registered a shutout in net with 30 saves.
The two rich-historied programs have met eight times in the NCAA Tournament, with seven of the eight meetings taking place in the Frozen Four semifinals. The two teams have split those meetings, 4-4, with the last NCAA Tournament matchup on March 27, 1997, when the top-ranked Wolverines were upset, 3-2 by the Terriers in Milwaukee, Wisc. Michigan beat BU, 4-0, on March 28, 1996 in Cincinnati, Ohio, as Greg Crozier scored twice and Marty Turco made 18 saves to earn the shutout in net, helping U-M to its first ever shutout in NCAA Tournament play.
Last season, the two schools split a two-game series in Boston, with BU taking game one, 3-2, and Michigan winning the Saturday tilt, 4-2.
Freshman forward Will Lockwood tallied a goal and an assist last night and now leads the team in points (10) and goals (6). His six goals ranks him tied for second amongst all rookies in NCAA DI and tied for the fifth-most goals amongst all scorers in NCAA DI.
Jack LaFontaine and Hayden Lavigne have seen the bulk of the action between the pipes for the Maize and Blue, both tied for a team high games played (3) entering the weekend. Lavigne currently has the top save percentage in NCAA DI (.956) and ranks third with a 1.50 goals-against average. Lafontaine is seventh in save percentage (.936)
Boston University has four first-round draft picks on their roster from the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, making the Terriers only the second collegiate team ever to have four players chosen in the first round of an NHL Draft.
UP AHEAD: Next Friday (Nov. 18), U-M will host the United States National Team Development Program (U.S. NTDP) Under-18 Team in exhibition action. The Wolverines feature eight alumni of the NTDP, including freshmen Luke Martin, Griffin Luce, Will Lockwood, James Sanchez and Nick Pastujov.
