ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team kept the score tied late into the third period, but No. 4 Boston University scored two unanswered goals in the final eight minutes to hand the Wolverines a 4-2 loss on Saturday (Nov. 12) at Yost Ice Arena.
BU scored the go-ahead goal at 12:37 into the third period, when Jordan Greenway tipped in a rebound after a difficult blocker save by freshman goalie Jack LaFontaine.
The Wolverines carried over their offensive success from Friday's (Nov. 11) game, starting the scoring at 2:11 into the contest. Freshman winger James Sanchez received the puck behind the BU net and delivered a setup pass into the slot, where junior center Brendan Warren one-timed it in for his first goal of the season.
Michigan continued to dominate the shot chart for most of the period, firing off 14 shots on goal in the opening frame while surrendering only six shots defensively.
Boston University tied the game early in the second period, when Dante Fabbro found the back of the net from the blocker-side circle with 11 seconds remaining in the man-advantage.
U-M narrowly missed an opportunity to take the lead at the halfway point of the period, when senior forward Alex Kile took a rebound of his own shot on the side of the net and tapped it back behind the goalie. However, the puck stayed in front of the goal line long enough for a Terrier defenseman to scoop it out of the crease and clear it into the corner.
The Terriers took the lead nine minutes into the third period after Charlie McAvoy crashed the net on a pass into the crease and tapped it into an open far side of the net.
Michigan responded less than 90 seconds later after junior forward Dexter Dancs secured a turnover in the defensive zone and weaved through the defenders before finding an opening over Jake Oettinger's near-side shoulder.
BU added a fourth goal with 4:57 remaining in the game on a slap shot from the top of the circle to secure the win.
U-M remains home next weekend, facing off against the United States National Team Development Program U-18 Team in exhibition action. Puck-drop is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 18) at Yost. [ Tickets ]
