ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman James Sanchez scored twice, and classmate Hayden Lavigne logged a shutout in his collegiate debut as the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 12 USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine, No. 11 USCHO) blanked visiting Union College, 4-0, Saturday night (Oct. 8) at Yost Ice Arena.
Making his collegiate debut, Lavigne made 31 saves, controlling rebounds and coming up big with a pair of point-blank saves at the 11:33 mark of the second period with the outcome still in doubt.
"The thing I liked about him is he was composed," said head coach Red Berenson about Lavigne in the postgame interview. "He didn't have to overreact or make outstanding saves. He was just in position all night and made it look easy."
Junior Niko Porikos, making his season debut on Saturday, sparked Michigan with a goal at the 15:49 mark of the first period, taking a pass from freshman Will Lockwood, who also scored in his debut on Friday (Oct. 7). Michigan expanded its lead just 15 seconds prior to intermission as Piazza flicked a shot on net in the waning seconds. Union goalie Jake Kapusky was seemingly shielded from the shot, and it sailed past for a 2-0 Wolverines' lead.
Sanchez's first goal of the night came at the 11:34 mark of the second period as Michigan skated a man down. Sophomore Nicholas Boka broke up a Union pass, and senior Max Shuart sent an outlet to Sanchez streaking up the middle of the ice. Uncontested by Union skaters, Sanchez focused on the left side of the net and snapped in a short-handed marker for the 3-0 lead.
Shuart and Sanchez linked up again two minutes into the third period for the final goal of the night. Shuart finished his weekend with three assists.
Michigan takes to the ice again Saturday, Oct. 15, with a road game at Ferris State in Big Rapids, Michigan. The Wolverines return to Yost the following weekend, Oct. 21-22, as part of homecoming festivities, hosting Michigan Tech in a pair of 7:30 games. [ Tickets ]
