CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The 19th-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team had a seven-game win streak snapped and suffered its first Big Ten loss, falling, 3-0, at Illinois on Thursday (Oct. 6) at Illinois Soccer Stadium.
Michigan outshot Illinois, 15-5, putting 10 on frame, but was shut out for the first time this season.
Illinois became the first team to score first on the Wolverines this season, as Reagan Robishaw scored from just outside the top right corner of the 18-yard box in the sixth minute.
The Illini quickly pushed their lead to 2-0 in the ninth minute. A long free kick from the middle of the field found the head of Kara Murbury as she made a run near the top of the six-yard box.
In the 26th minute, a long throw by senior Rosalind Porritt nearly led to a Wolverine goal, as senior/junior Ani Sarkisian's header was just tipped over the bar by Illini goalkeeper Claire Wheatley.
Illinois took a three-goal lead before the half as a long ball was played over the top to Katie Murray, who took a touch outside the top of the six and tucked it inside the right post.
The three goals are a first for both teams, as it marks the most goals U-M has given up this season and the most Illinois has scored in a game in 2016.
Senior Melissa Kreutz had two of Michigan's best chances in succession in the second half as her header off sophomore Reilly Martin's cross was saved by Wheatley, and the follow up shot was cleared off the line by an Illinois defender.
The loss brought a streak of seven consecutive wins to a halt, just win one shy of tying the program record of eight straight wins set by the 2013 team (Oct. 3-Nov. 2).
The Wolverines will now head north to Evanston, Illinois, and look to rebound against Northwestern on Sunday (Oct. 9) at 1 p.m. CDT. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
