EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 19th-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team lost its second straight game for the first time since August 2014, falling, 2-1, at Northwestern on Sunday (Oct. 9) at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.
Overall, Michigan outshot Northwestern, 17-6, including 12-3 in shots on goal, but the Wildcats capitalized on more of their chances. Lauren Clem made 11 saves in goal for Northwestern, while junior/sophomore Sarah Jackson made one stop in net for U-M.
For the second time in as many games and just the second time this season, Michigan was the first team to concede a goal. A long Wildcat free kick was played to the top of the six-yard box, where Michele Chernesky used her body to bump it into the goal at 14:30.
The Wolverines quickly evened the playing field in the 19th minute as senior captain Madisson Lewis carried the ball from her position at right back into the 18-yard box, and her shot caught the hand of a Northwestern defender, drawing a penalty kick. Sophomore Reilly Martin stepped to the penalty spot and converted her third PK of the season, making her a perfect 3-for-3 on the season.
Michigan held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the opening half, and the score remained tied 1-1 at the break.
It was Northwestern that broke the tie early in the second half, scoring in the 49th minute as a long cross was tipped by Jackson but fell right to the head of Olivia Korhonen for the goal.
Both team produced several more chances in the remainder of the second half, including a free kick in the 75th minute that Martin put directly on frame, but it was hauled in by Clem.
The Wolverines will return to Ann Arbor to host Wisconsin on Thursday (Oct. 13) at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus. Thursday is Dollar Day at U-M Soccer Stadium. Fans can take advantage of $1 general-admission tickets and $1 hot dogs and 16 oz. fountain drinks.
