ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On the University of Michigan women's soccer team's senior night and final home game of the 2016 season, the Wolverines had their unbeaten home record spoiled in a 2-1 loss to Ohio State on Saturday (Oct. 22) at U-M Soccer Stadium to finish their home slate 7-1-3.
Prior to the game, Michigan honored its seven seniors -- Madisson Lewis, Bailey Haydock, Melissa Kreutz, Anna Soccorsi, Rosalind Porritt, Jessica Heifetz and Nicky Waldeck. Together that class has an overall record of 51-20-9, including a 37-4-5 mark at home.
Ohio State got the scoring going early, as Sammy Edwards capitalized on Ohio State's first shot of the game in the fifth minute.
Michigan responded and tied the game in the 32nd minute, as a long shot from outside the right side of the 18-yard box from sophomore Reilly Martin was initially blocked by Buckeye goalkeeper Devon Kerr, but sophomore Abby Kastroll was there to immediately tap in the rebound near the goal line.
When the halftime buzzer sounded, Michigan was holding an 8-5 advantage in shots and had earned five corner kicks while not allowing a single one, and the game was tied 1-1.
The early minutes of the second half featured five fouls (U-M 3, OSU 2) until the first shot of the half by OSU's Nichelle Prince found the back of the net to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead.
Michigan outshot OSU, 7-3, in the second half, including U-M's most dangerous chance in the 64th minute, when senior/junior Ani Sarkisian received a ball over the top and cut back a Buckeye defender to create a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper, but OSU's Kerr came out hard to make the sliding save.
In the 77th minute, Martin put a long free kick of the left sideline directly on frame, and it was heading into the upper right 90 until Kerr snatched it out of the air.
With six minutes remaining, OSU nearly widened the gap, as Prince took a shot from outside the top of the box that ricocheted off the cross bar.
Overall, Kerr finished with five saves, while junior/sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jackson made a pair of stops for the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines will now head to Bloomington, Indiana, to wrap up the regular season against the Indiana Hoosiers on Wednesday (Oct. 26) at 6 p.m. Seeding for the Big Ten Tournament will be determined after Wednesday's Big Ten matches.
Thank you to our seven a-maize-ing seniors! #goblue
