BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team rallied from a one-goal deficit with less than 10 minutes remaining, getting late goals from senior Nicky Waldeck and senior/junior Ani Sarkisian in the final six minutes to defeat Indiana, 3-2, on Wednesday (Oct. 26) at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
With 13 minutes remaining in the game, Michigan had a 17-7 advantage in shots, but the game remained tied, 1-1. Michigan did not allow a Hoosier shot from the 17-minute mark to the 67-minute mark. Despite the Wolverines dominating play, it was Indiana that scored the go-ahead goal as Meghan Scott crossed it to Maya Piper, who headed it inside the right post in the 78th minute.
Following the IU goal, Michigan did not produce a shot until the 84th minute, when Sarkisian played a ball from the middle of the park into the right side of the box for Waldeck to run onto, and Waldeck tucked it inside the right post to tie the game 2-2 with 6:06 remaining.
Down the stretch, Michigan drew two corner kicks, and the second one proved to be crucial for the Wolverines. Sophomore Reilly Martin served the corner from the right side, and it was initially cleared away by IU's defense. Senior Rosalind Porritt was there to play it back into the box, and Indiana goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu punched it out, right to the head of Sarkisian, who headed it into an open net with 2:16 left to give the Maize and Blue the win in dramatic fashion.
The Hoosiers had the offensive momentum in their favor in the early going, as they recorded five of the first six shots of the game, scoring on their first shot of the match.
For the second straight game, U-M's opponent scored the first goal of the game in the first six minutes of play. Mykayla Brown took a shot on the right side of the penalty box, and senior defender Anna Soccorsi got a piece of it, but the shot had enough force to go over the head of junior/sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jackson and find the back of the net just inside the far post at 5:13.
Following the streak of Indiana shots, Michigan shifted the momentum in its favor, producing the next eight shots in the first half and not allowing a Hoosier shot for the remainder of the half.
The Wolverines found the equalizer in the 33rd minute, as Porritt chucked a long throw into IU's penalty bo,x and freshman Jada Dayne flicked it with her head to the feet of Martin, who redirected it into the bottom right corner of the net.
The Wolverines rebounded to earn a win in its regular-season finale after going 0-3-2 in its previous five matches. Michigan finished its Big Ten season with 6-3-2 mark and has continued its streak of finishing in the top five of the Big Ten in each of the last five seasons. With tonight's win, Michigan secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and will host No. 5-seed Wisconsin in the quarterfinals on Sunday (Oct. 30) at 4 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. Tickets to the match will go on-sale Thursday, Oct. 27, beginning at 10 a.m. [ Ticket Information ]
