ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman forward Nick Pastujov scored just 2:16 into his Wolverine debut, and junior Dexter Dancs added an empty-net goal as the University of Michigan ice hockey team -- ranked No. 11 by USCHO -- eased past visiting Windsor in a 2-0 exhibition victory Sunday (Oct. 2) at Yost Ice Arena.
Pastujov, sidelined for much of the summer with a shoulder injury, is still working his way back to form but set the tone in an entertaining opener with his stick work. Starting goaltender Zach Nagelvoort sent an outlet to junior Tony Calderone, who found a streaking Pastujov just outside the left faceoff circle. Pastujov looked to improve his angle on goal but was cut off by a well-positioned Windsor defender. The Bradenton, Florida, native quickly shifted the puck to his backhand and flicked a quick shot between Lancer goalie Kris Joyce's glove and body, directly under his arm pit for the goal.
It marked the game's only pure goal as Joyce stopped 34 shots in a fine defensive effort.
As it has traditionally done in early exhibition games, Michigan utilized three goalies. Nagelvoort was smooth in stopping seven shots to go with his assist in the victory. Freshmen Hayden Lavigne (13 saves) and Jack LaFontaine (12 saves) both impressed in an open-ended game as each youngster came up with high-caliber stops. Lavigne had perhaps his finest save midway through the second period with a smooth kick save on Windsor's Tyson Ness' point-blank effort on a break-away. LaFontaine showed his ability with two nifty stops, including at the 15:17 mark of the third period as he denied Sebastian Beauregard's elevated one-timer on the door step.
Dancs put the game away at the 19:02 mark with an empty-netter.
The Wolverines open the regular season on Friday (Oct. 7) at Yost Ice Arena, with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. against Union (N.Y.).
Prior to Sunday's exhibition, Michigan elected seniors Nolan De Jong and Alex Kile as co-captains for the 2016-17 campaign, while senior classmate Kevin Lohan will serve as an alternate.
