ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 25th-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 double-overtime draw with No. 15 Minnesota on Sunday (Oct. 16) at U-M Soccer Stadium to continue its unbeaten home streak at 7-0-3 this season.
Strong team defense from the Maize and Blue helped U-M become the third team to shut out the Gophers, who were leading the Big Ten in goals scored entering the match (Duke, Wisconsin). The Wolverines were held scoreless for the just the second time this season. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jackson earned her sixth shutout of the season, ending the game with a career-high 11 saves.
Today marked U-M's second straight overtime game, as the Wolverines tied with Wisconsin, 1-1, on Thursday (Oct. 13), and its fourth overtime match this season (1-0-3).
The first half involved a lot of back-and-forth action between the Wolverines and the Golden Gophers, which recorded six and 10 shots, respectively in the first 45 minutes. Jackson made six saves in the first half to keep Minnesota's offense at bay. In the 30th minute, sophomore Reilly Martin found senior Jessica Heifetz in the box on a long cross from the right flank, but Heifetz's shot went just wide left. Michigan drew its first corner kick of the game in the 45th minute, and Martin's serve found the head of senior/junior Ani Sarkisian, who headed it just wide right, bringing the scoreless first half to a close.
Michigan's most dangerous second-half chance came in the 85th minute, when freshman Brooke DeSantis played a long ball in behind to Waldeck, who beat one defender and found herself 1-on-1 with Minnesota's goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs, but her shot sailed just over the bar. Minnesota was pressuring near Michigan's goal as time dwindled down in the regulation, but the Gophers could not get off a shot, sending the game to overtime.
Michigan's defense held tough through two sudden-victory overtime periods keeping all four of Minnesota's overtime shots out of the net, while the Wolverines were held without a shot in extra time.
With the draw, Michigan remains in fourth place in the Big Ten standings, three points out of first place behind Minnesota. The Wolverines will host Ohio State in its regular-season home finale on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. Prior to the game, the women's soccer program will honor it seven seniors in a special ceremony. Tickets for that match are available by visiting the women's soccer ticket page.
