The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team (1-0) is back in the water this weekend, sending nine student-athletes to the SMU Classic, set for Friday (Oct. 14) and Saturday (Oct. 15) at the Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville, Texas. The competition will begin at 6:30 p.m. CDT each day.
FORMAT
The SMU Classic is a six-team meet run over two days in a six-lane pool. Each team is comprised of eight swimmers and one diver. The Wolverines are scheduled to send Yirong Bi, Catie DeLoof, Gabby DeLoof, Siobhán Haughey, Kristen Hayden, Emily Kopas, Vanessa Krause, Becca Postoll and Clara Smiddy.
This year, Michigan will face contingents from SMU, UCLA, Louisville, USC and Miami (Fla.). Of the six teams in the field, the Trojans had the highest finish at last year's NCAA Championships (sixth), followed by Louisville (eighth), Michigan (10th), UCLA (17th), and Miami and SMU (both tied for 40th).
A swimmer may swim three events per day, but one of those must be a relay. There are championship and consolation heats for each individual swimming race. Each team will enter one swimmer per heat. There is only one heat for relays.

WOLVERINE BITES
The Wolverines are making their second visit to SMU and first since competing at the SMU Invitational during the 1995-96 season. The men's team, though not this year, has been to three SMU Classics, taking first place in 2011 and 2013 and second in 2012.
Through one competition, seven swimmers have reached the NCAA 'B' standard in at least one individual event: Catie DeLoof (100-yard freestyle), Yirong Bi (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), Clara Smiddy (100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke), Gabby DeLoof (100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke), Emily Kopas (200-yard breaststroke), Vanessa Krause (100-yard butterfly) and Siobhán Haughey (200-yard IM).
Though it is still very early, several swimmers already hold top times in the national collegiate ranks: Catie DeLoof (first in 100-yard freestyle), Yirong Bi (first in 500-yard freestyle, first in 1,000-yard freestyle, second in 200-yard freestyle, third in 400-yard IM) and Siobhán Haughey (second in 200-yard IM). Others in the current top five include Becca Postoll (200-yard freestyle), G Ryan (500-yard freestyle), Clara Smiddy (100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke) and Emily Kopas (200-yard breaststroke).
Three divers have already punched their tickets to the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in March: Kristen Hayden (one-meter, three-meter), Keegan McCaffrey (one-meter, three-meter) and Allie Murphy (three-meter). Murphy was one of three divers to represent U-M at the NCAA Championships last season. Hayden will represent the United States at the World Junior Championships this December in Russia.
Eight of the team's nine freshmen made their collegiate debuts last week. Newcomers Kristen Hayden (one-meter, three-meter) and Vanessa Krause (100-yard butterfly) were victors in their first events.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines opened the season with a three-session victory over Louisville last weekend at Canham Natatorium, winning the three individual sessions by margins of 257-179 (Friday), 274-196 (Saturday morning) and 266-205 (Saturday afternoon).
