ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held a nine-point lead with 3:18 before the half, but Iowa used a 10-0 spurt to end the half to take the lead for good as the Hawkeyes took an 85-69 win on Thursday evening (Jan. 28) inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty finished with a game-high 31 points on 12-for-18 shooting, including a 5-for-8 showing from three-point range. Michigan had a trio of players join her in double figures in points in senior Kelsey Mitchell (11), senior Madison Ristovski (11) and freshman Hallie Thome (10). Michigan shot 46.6 percent (27-for-58) from the floor, while Iowa shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59). The Hawkeyes held a 39-31 advantage on the glass.
The first 10 minutes featured three ties and seven lead changes, but the teams were knotted at 23 at the end of the opening stanza. Flaherty was 6-for-6 from the floor in the frame and had 16 of Michigan's 23 points.
Michigan scored the first seven points of the second quarter on a jumper from Ristovski and five points from Flaherty. U-M's lead hovered around six points for the next several minutes. The Wolverines took a nine-point lead on four straight free throws from freshman Boogie Brozoski in the second quarter with 3:18 on the clock.
Iowa ended the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 42-41 lead into the break as both Thome and Mitchell fell in foul trouble. Flaherty led the way, scoring 24 points on 8-for-10 shooting, with Brozoski chipping in six off the bench. U-M shot 53.6 percent (15-for-28) from the floor in the first half compared to 43.3 percent (13-for-30) for the Hawkeyes.
The Hawkeyes opened the third quarter on a 15-5 run, taking their largest lead of the game (57-46) on three-point play at the 4:25 mark. Michigan cut the Iowa lead to four points on a Mitchell layup off an out-of-bounds play with just 49 seconds left in the period, but Iowa scored the final four points for a 65-57 lead heading into the fourth.
Ristovski hit a triple in transition to bring Michigan within six, 72-66, with 3:29 left in the game. Following the Wolverine timeout, the teams exchanged baskets as the Iowa lead stayed at six points. Michigan forced two straight misses for the Hawkeyes but gave up back-to-back offensive rebounds as Iowa kept possession. Forced to foul, Iowa made the first and missed the second but chased down the rebound to once again keep the ball. Iowa made its free throws down the stretch to take the 16-point win.
