ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind 31 points from freshman Hallie Thome and 24 points from sophomore Katelynn Flaherty, the University of Michigan women's basketball team knocked off Minnesota, 92-76, on Sunday afternoon in its pink game inside Crisler Center.
Thome tallied a new career high in the game, crossing the 30-point plateau for the first time in her career on 14-for-20 shooting. Flaherty scored 15 of her 24 points in the second half, including nine in the final frame, to go with three rebounds and four assists. Junior Siera Thompson had 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in 39 minutes of action, with senior Kelsey Mitchell chipping in 12 points. Sophomore Jillian Dunston grabbed 14 rebounds in 23 minutes of action as Michigan outrebounded the Gophers, 44-42.
With Michigan holding a four-point lead, 73-69, with 5:02 remaining, back-to-back layups from Flaherty and Mitchell ignited an 8-0 run. Michigan took an 82-69 lead at the 3:34 mark off a pair of Mitchell free throws. Neither team scored again until Thompson split a pair of free throws with 1:39 left.
Michigan made 10-of-12 free throws in the final 1:24 to seal the win.
The Maize and Blue ended the third quarter on a 12-2 run, turning a 53-52 deficit into a 64-55 lead after 30 minutes of play. A layup by freshman Boogie Brozoski in transition from Flaherty started the run, which featured two Flaherty triples and layups from Thome and senior Madison Ristovski.
Minnesota took a six-point lead after the first 10 minutes of play and extended its lead to seven twice in the second quarter. With Michigan trailing 27-20 with 7:00 left in the second quarter, Flaherty scored five straight points to ignite a U-M spurt. Mitchell's layup with 4:23 on the clock tied the contest at 29, with Thompson's three-point play at the 3:16 mark giving U-M a 34-31 lead. Michigan led by as many as seven in the closing minutes of the second quarter.
Michigan headed to the locker room at the half with a 44-39 lead behind 18 points from Thome, nine from Flaherty and eight from Mitchell. Michigan shot 51.5 percent (17-for-33) from the floor in the first half while holding Minnesota to a 42.1 percent (16-for-38) clip.
U-M heads to East Lansing on Wednesday (Feb. 3) to take on Michigan State. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Breslin Center.
