ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team had four players score in double figures and led wire to wire in a 93-86 win at Minnesota on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 10) at Williams Arena.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty scored 33 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the floor and a 12-for-13 showing from the free throw line. Junior Siera Thompson added a season-high 18 points to go with eight assists, while freshman Hallie Thome had 16, and senior Kelsey Mitchell scored 13 points and had nine rebounds. Sophomore Jillian Dunston grabbed a career-best 15 boards as U-M held a 46-34 advantage on the glass.
U-M jumped out to a 10-4 lead, capped by a Flaherty steal and score in transition to force an early Minnesota timeout at the 7:49 mark. The Wolverines did not let up in the first quarter, taking a 35-20 lead after 10 minutes. It was the highest scoring first quarter for the Maize and Blue this season.
Michigan took a 53-42 lead into the locker room behind 20 points from Flaherty, 11 from Thompson, eight from Thome and six from Mitchell. U-M shot 55.3 percent (21-38) from the floor in the first 20 minutes and led by as many as 17 points in the half.
The Maize and Blue opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run on five points from Mitchell and two from Thome, forcing a Minnesota timeout with U-M ahead 60-42 at the 7:20 mark.
Minnesota ended the third on a 6-0 run to cut Michigan's lead to single digits, 70-63. The Gophers got within five points at the start of the fourth, but Michigan answered with a 6-0 run on four points from Thompson and two from Flaherty to regain an 11-point lead with 8:04 left.
The Gophers once again cut the Michigan lead to five points, 78-73, with 4:21, but U-M held Minnesota without a point for nearly three minutes for an 83-73 advantage with 1:54 on the clock. The Wolverines scored on a Thome layup and three free throws from Flaherty during the spurt.
Michigan made 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the seven-point win.
U-M returns home on Thursday (Jan. 14) to welcome Maryland to Crisler Center. Tip is set for 6 p.m., and the contest can be seen live on the Big Ten Network. [ Tickets ]
