ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team took a 52-50 lead with 4:48 left in the third quarter and was within four points with 7:54 left, but No. 8 Maryland used a 12-0 fourth quarter run to take a 74-67 win over Michigan Thursday evening (Jan. 14) inside Crisler Center.
Michigan trailed by as many as 12 in the first half, before sophomore Katelynn Flaherty scored the first five points of the third quarter to pull U-M within two (42-40) as Maryland used an early timeout at the 8:48 mark. Michigan took its first lead of the game on a pair of senior Madison Ristovski free throws at the 6:17 mark, 47-46.
Freshman Hallie Thome completed a three-point play for a 52-50 lead with 4:48 of the third quarter, but Michigan did not score again until the 8:51 mark of the fourth quarter. With Michigan hanging within four points with 7:54 on the fourth-quarter clock, the Terps used a 12-0 run over 4:43 to take a commanding 73-57 lead with 3:11 to go. Michigan answered with a 10-0 run of its own, but Maryland hung on for the seven-point win.
Flaherty led the way with a game-high 23 points, while Thome had 15 points, five rebounds and a career-best five blocks. Senior Kelsey Mitchell scored nine points, senior Siera Thompson chipped in eight, and sophomore Jillian Dunston had a game-high eight rebounds. Ristovski handed out a career-best seven assists.
In the first quarter, Michigan cut an early Maryland lead to 16-11 on a Dunston layup, but the Terps answered with five straight to regain a 21-11 lead to force a U-M timeout. The Maize and Blue closed within six at the end of the quarter as Thome scored the final basket at 25-19.
The Maize and Blue got within four points at 38-34 on a Thompson triple in transition, resulting in a Maryland timeout with 2:08 left in the second quarter. Maryland scored four of the quarter's final five points to take a 42-35 lead into the locker room. Flaherty led the way for Michigan, scoring 11 points, with Mitchell going for nine and Thome chipping in eight. Michigan shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the floor in the first half, compared to 43.8 percent (14-for-32) for the Terps.
Michigan now hits the road for a Sunday afternoon (Jan. 17) contest at Penn State. Tip is 2 p.m. from State College.
