LAKE AIGUEBELETTE, France -- University of Michigan rowing alumnae Amanda Elmore (gold, women's quadruple sculls) and Felice Mueller (bronze, women's pair) both earned medals last week with USRowing at the 2015 World Rowing Championships, which concluded on Sunday (Sept. 6) in Lake Aiguebelette, France. This year's World Championships also served as the Olympic qualification regatta, meaning Elmore, Mueller, and Ellen Tomek (11th overall, double sculls) all accomplished the goal of Olympic qualification for the United States in each of their respective events.
Rowing in the bow seat, Elmore's quadruple sculls crew had to qualify for the Saturday (Sept. 5) final by narrowly edging Great Britain for second place in the repechage heat in 6:27.28 on Sept. 2. In a windy final, the USRowing quadruple sculls led the entire second half of the race, winning gold with a time of 6:27.07. For Elmore, it is her first gold medal in her first appearance with the senior national team at the World Rowing Championships.
Mueller's women's pair finished first in heats on Aug. 30 and Sept. 3 (A/B semifinal) before taking third place in the A final on Saturday (Sept. 5) in 7:00.55 behind New Zealand and Great Britain. For Mueller, it marks her third World Rowing Championships medal after earning bronze in the women's quadruple sculls in 2014 and gold in the women's four in 2013.
A highly accomplished rower at the collegiate level, Mueller was named 2012 Michigan Female Athlete of the Year. She earned College Rowing Coaches Association Pocock All-America first team honors and was named the Big Ten Rower of the Year after leading the Wolverines to the 2012 Big Ten championship and a second-place finish in the 2012 NCAA Championships.
Elmore, a 2014 Pocock All-America Second Team and All-Big Ten First Team selection, is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Michigan and used her final year of eligibility to row at U-M in 2013-14 after four seasons of rowing for the club team at Purdue.
Tomek, a 2006 All-Big Ten Second Team selection, rowed in the women's double sculls at the 2008 Olympics, finishing fifth overall. Earlier this summer, Tomek earned a silver medal in the double sculls at the World Rowing Cup 2.
