ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite holding a 1-0 lead at halftime and outshooting Marquette, 14-5, the University of Michigan women's soccer team gave up a pair of second-half goals separated by just 34 seconds and suffered its first loss of 2015, 2-1, to finish its opening weekend, 1-1, on Sunday (Aug. 23) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Michigan got on the board early in the match, as junior/sophomore Ani Sarkisian cleaned up a loose ball that came across the mouth of the goal left to right and tucked it inside the left post.
The Wolverines posted 10 shots in the first half, compared to just two by the Golden Eagles, and had several quality opportunities but settled for a 1-0 advantage at the half. Freshman Reilly Martin had two shots in the opening half, including one immediately after she checked into the game in the 27th minute that came dangerously close to bending inside the right post.
In the 50th minute, the Wolverines got one of their best chances of the second half, as senior Christina Murillo served a cross off a short corner from the left side to junior Nicky Waldeck, whose header went just wide of the right post.
After keeping the Golden Eagles scoreless for the first 77 minutes of play, Marquette notched the equalizer at 77:41, as Allison Jacobson knocked a volley past U-M goalkeeper Megan Hinz. Marquette kept the pressure on off the restart and took a 2-1 lead just 34 seconds later when Molly Pfeiffer headed in a cross from Liz Bartels.
Freshman Abby Kastroll, who earned her first career start in tonight's match, and Martin each had close calls in the final four minutes, but both their shots went just over the cross bar, and Marquette escaped with the 2-1 win.
The Wolverines will wrap up a four-game homestand next week when they host San Diego on Thursday (Aug. 27) and Detroit on Sunday (Aug. 30). Both matches will begin at 7:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
