LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of Michigan junior Sierra Romero was selected as one of four finalists for the Honda Sports Award for softball, the honor that recognizes the national player of the year, as announced Thursday (June 4) by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA).
The Honda Sports Award is presented annually by the CWSA to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics." The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2015 Honda Cup.
Romero was named the inaugural espnW Softball Player of the Year and was a top-three finalist for USA Softball Player of the Year. A three-time NFCA All-American, including a repeat first-team selection, she is also a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and was named the 2015 Big Ten Tournament MVP. She was a 2014 nominee for the Honda Softball award.
A native of Murrieta, California, Romero led the Wolverines with a .449 average this season, 22 home runs and single-season program records in runs scored (85) and RBI (83). She is Michigan's career record holder in six offensive categories.
Other finalists include Oklahoma's Lauren Chamberlain of Oklahoma, Florida's Lauren Haeger and Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins. The nominees were chosen by a group of experts representing the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
The Honda Sports award winner for softball will be announced next week after voting by administrators from more than 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
