Wolverines Come Up Short in Weekday Matchup with Dartmouth

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Michael Zhu and sophomore/freshman Alex Knight posted straight-set singles victories, but the University of Michigan men's tennis team fell to Dartmouth, 4-3, on Thursday night (Feb. 26) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Dartmouth claimed the doubles point to open the match. Sam Todd and Diego Pedraza defeated the duo of sophomore/freshman Davis Crocker and sophomore Tyler Gardiner, 6-2, as the first match off the court in the No. 3 position. Then the No. 18-ranked tandem of Dovydas Sakinis and Chris Kipouras bested seniors Alex Petrone and Zhu by the score of 6-4, clinching the doubles point for the Big Green.
Dartmouth took a 2-0 lead when No. 82-ranked Sakinis took down Petrone, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 singles position. Zhu finished next, defeating No. 108-ranked Kipouras in straight sets to put Michigan on the scoreboard. The Big Green then took a 3-1 lead when Brendan Tannenbaum knocked off Crocker, 6-4, 6-4.
Knight won in the No. 4 position, 7-6 (4), 6-2, to make the score 3-2. Freshman Carter Lin split sets with his opponent but dropped the final set, 6-1, clinching the victory for Dartmouth. Freshman Runhao Hua was the final match off the court, and after splitting sets, he won the third-set super tiebreaker, 10-7, making the final score 4-3 in Dartmouth's favor.
The Maize and Blue will travel to La Jolla, California, next weekend to participate in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship, with play beginning on Friday (March 6).
