ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Christina O'Beck is a center from Newport Beach, California, and is contemplating a major in education or international relations at the University of Michigan. MGoBlue.com sat down with O'Beck for a Q&A.
Q. Why did you choose the University of Michigan?
A. I'm from Orange County and growing up I felt like I was in a bubble. I knew that I wanted to experience something new. I was the only one in my high school class that considered going out of state. The athletic community is so special at Michigan, and that stood out to me. I always knew I wanted to go here after competing in a Speedo Cup tournament here in the seventh grade.
Q. What is it like being the first from your family to attend college?
A. I am the prized child right now. Everyone from my family will call and ask how it is. When I went home for Thanksgiving I got bombarded with questions. It is kind of overwhelming, but you can tell they are really proud of me.
Q. How did you get started playing water polo?
A. In fifth grade I was a swimmer, and one of my best friends from elementary school started playing. She told me that I should try it. Within a year I dropped swimming and stayed with water polo.
Q: What are you thinking about for your major?
A: Right now I am a preferred admit to the school of education, but I am thinking of switching to international studies. In international studies I would hope to go under the national peace and security subplan.
Q. What community service activities do you like to do?
A. Our entire sophomore class is really into going to Mott Children's Hospital every Thursday night.
Q. What is your favorite place on campus?
A. I like the Union. It is really pretty and quiet. I go and study there when I need to get stuff done.
Q. Who is the first person you call after a bad day?
A. My mom.
Q. What is the last picture taken with your cell phone?
A. It is a picture of me and my housemate. I was sleeping and she took it of us.
Q. If you could come out to the start of a match to an entrance song, what would it be?
A. Time to Say Goodbye by Andrea Bocelli. I love opera.
Q. What is your song of choice for karaoke?
A. Don't Stop Believing by Journey
Q. What is your favorite follow on social media?
A. I follow the Kardashians. It is my guilty pleasure to see what they are up to.
Q. If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy?
A. A mansion on the beach in Newport, Rhode Island.
Q. If you could participate in any other sport what would it be?
A. Gymnastics
Q. What is your favorite Marcelo mannerism that you like to see someone recreate? (From Katherine Moore)
A. When he tries to hide his frustration after we mess up in practice by rubbing his ears. Kim (Graziano) does the best impersonation of it.
