ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Katherine Moore is a goalkeeper from Atherton, California, and is contemplating a major in international studies with a minor in entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan. MGoBlue.com sat down with Moore for a Q&A.
Q. Why did you choose the University of Michigan?
A. I wanted to look at schools out of state. I come from the Bay Area in California, and I wanted a change in scenery, somewhere with four seasons. My sister, Hathaway, played water polo here and taught me everything I needed to know about it. When it came down to it, I couldn't say no to a powerhouse school, with great athletics and academics.
Q. How did you get started playing water polo?
A. When my sister first committed here to play water polo, I wasn't playing the sport. I was a tennis player at the time. I didn't want to try water polo, but I came to watch Hathaway play at Michigan for the first time. I remember watching the goalies, and Morgan Turner was so awesome. I decided I needed to look into the sport more. Michigan actually led me to water polo more than water polo led me to Michigan.
Q. What is one of your favorite drills at practice?
A. Cap drills for us goalies is my favorite. It is the hardest for me. It works a lot on lateral movement and leg strength. It is something I always want to get better at. It pushes you every time. Even if you have done it for a year it never gets easier.
Q. What did you do last summer?
A. The past two summers I have worked for the Stanford Center for International Development and worked the India Conference. I helped recreate the website, doing some web designing and cleaning up the database.
Q. Have you taken any interesting classes recently?
A. I'm in a class called Entrepreneurial Creativity with Caroline Anderson. We are in a group project where we had to come up with an idea like creating an app and starting a business. We are working on creating an app to organize housing at Michigan. I think that's really cool, creating an app to present to people and see how they react.
Q. Are you involved with any other groups outside of water polo?
A. I'm a member of SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee). I am also part of student ambassadors. We get to work all the big games and meet a lot of our alumni.
Q. What is your favorite place on campus?
A. I would say the Arb. Last year, we went when it snowed. We went sledding, and it was so pretty.
Q. Who is the first person you call after a bad day?
A. Tie between my mom and my sister. They always make me feel better. It is really nice to have a supportive family like that.
Q. If you could come out at the start of a match to an entrance song, what would it be?
A. All the Above by Maino. It was my pump up song in high school.
Q. If there was a movie made about you, who would you want to play you?
A. Audrey Hepburn, if I could choose anybody.
Q. What is your favorite follow on social media?
A. I would say my sister. I like seeing what she is doing back home. I really just follow my friends. I like friendship pictures.
Q. What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?
A. A house by the marina in San Francisco with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge
Q. What is your most prized possession?
A. A pair of earrings my mom gave me that were my grandmothers. That keeps me connected to my family.
Q. If you were stranded on an island, what is the one thing you would want with you? (From Caroline Anderson)
A. A golden retriever to keep me company.
