ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Sydney Groot is a defender from Tustin, California, and is contemplating entering the School of Information at the University of Michigan. MGoBlue.com sat down with Groot for a Q&A.
Q. Why did you choose the University of Michigan?
A. On my recruiting trip I came to the Notre Dame-Michigan night game. Football was huge. There is a ton of school spirit, and that is what stood out to me. Everyone is wearing a Michigan shirt all the time and everyone loves Michigan. I really liked the camaraderie.
Q. How did you get started playing water polo?
A. I started playing water polo in seventh grade. I got started because my dad wanted me to find a sport I liked. We went through every sport by the alphabet and got all the way down to water polo, and that was one sport I hadn't tried. I ended up trying it and loved it.
Q. What are you thinking about for your major?
A: My major is going to be communication studies. After college I would like to be a commercial real estate agent. I did an internship in that field last summer and loved it. The place I worked at is 100-percent commission based so taking the viewpoint from an athlete I loved the mentality of what you put in is what you get out.
Q. Are you involved with any other groups on campus?
A: Yeah this year I started going to AIA (Athletes in Action). It is a Christian-based group of athletes who meet every Wednesday. They bring in speakers from Detroit, which is eye-opening to me because the life in Detroit is so different from the life I had in California. I love their stories and also meeting other athletes.
Q. What community service activities do you like to do?
A. I go to Mott every Thursday, which is super fun. You get to talk with little kids and hang out with them, give them a break from reality.
Q. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
A. Ann Arbor is a foodie town so I love going and trying new places. I also really like shopping and hanging out with my friends.
Q. What is your favorite place on campus?
A. My favorite place is the law quad. No matter what season it is, it is always really pretty. I love to walk through there when I have a break between classes. It is really relaxing for me there.
Q. If you were having a slumber party and could invite anyone, who would it be?
A. I would invite Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence. They are hilarious people, and it would be the funniest sleepover ever.
Q. If you could come out at the start of a match to an entrance song, what would it be?
A. My House by Flo Rida
Q. What is your favorite Michigan sporting event to attend?
A. Football. Hands down. The leading up to the game and the hype and then being in the Big House.
Q. What is your favorite follow on social media?
A. On Snapchat it is Kylie Jenner and on Instagram I follow a lot of swimwear accounts.
Q. Most visited website?
A. Buzzfeed
Q. If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy?
A. My tuition
Q. What is your favorite funny movie? (From Addi Halligan)
A. I have two. Get Smart is one of my family's favorite movies, and I can quote it line for line. My other favorite movie is Trainwreck. Amy Schumer is hilarious, and it gets funnier every time I see it.
