ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team took a six-point lead with 3:17 remaining, but Purdue hit a three-pointer with 6.4 seconds remaining to take a three-point lead en route to a 65-63 Boilermaker win on Thursday afternoon (Dec. 31) inside Crisler Center.
Freshman Boogie Brozoski was fouled on a three-point attempt with 0.3 second remaining, giving her a chance to force overtime with three makes. She missed the first two before canning the third to provide the final margin.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty paced the Wolverine offense, scoring 19 points to go with five assists and three rebounds. Freshman Hallie Thome chipped in 14 points and six rebounds, while senior Madison Ristovski scored 11 off the bench. Michigan shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the floor in the game and held a 42-32 advantage on the glass but made just 12-of-21 free throws in the game.
U-M took a six-point lead with 3:17 left on a pair of freshman Nicole Munger free throws. Purdue's Bridget Perry then scored six straight points to tie the contest at 62 with 2:08 left. Neither team scored again until the final sequence of the game.
Facing a five-point halftime deficit, Michigan tied the contest at 37 with a 7-2 run to open the third quarter. Purdue answered back with a 7-3 run of its own to regain a 44-40 lead with 4:53 left in the frame.
Sophomore Jillian Dunston converted a three-point play for 49-48 lead with 1:56 left in the third after Flaherty tied it at 46 with a triple with 3:05 on the third-quarter clock. It was Michigan's first lead since the first half. After three quarters, U-M held a 51-50 lead.
Michigan took a 17-16 lead after one quarter, as the teams went back and forth in the early going.
Purdue scored nine straight points on three triples for a 33-26 lead with 4:10 remaining in the second quarter, forcing a U-M timeout. Michigan held the Boilers to just two points the rest of the quarter as Purdue headed to the locker room with a 35-30 advantage. Ristovski led the way offensively for U-M, scoring 11 points off the bench, with Thome chipping in seven and Flaherty six.
Michigan continues Big Ten action on Sunday (Jan. 3), traveling to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers. Tip is set for 12:30 p.m. and can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
