ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty hit a three-pointer with 27.1 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime, but the University of Michigan women's basketball team dropped a 77-69 contest to Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 3) inside Assembly Hall.
Michigan took a nine-point lead, 58-49, on a Flaherty layup with 5:48 to go, but scored just one more time in regulation. With the game tied at 61 after Flaherty's three-pointer and Indiana getting the final possession, junior Siera Thompson rebounded an errant three-pointer and raced to the other end of the court where her runner fell just short.
In overtime, the teams went back-and-forth before an Indiana jumper at the free throw line gave the Hoosiers the lead for good at the 2:20 mark. Michigan cut the lead to two one more time with 1:22 remaining, but Indiana hit 8-of-10 free throws in the final 1:14 of the game to seal the win.
Flaherty led the way for Michigan offensively, scoring 20 points on 8-for-19 shooting. Thompson put in 15 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists, while senior Madison Ristovski went for nine points. Michigan was whistled for 31 fouls in the contest, resulting in 42 Indiana free throws.
Michigan had a 13-1 run spanning the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters to take a 54-45 lead on a triple by Thompson with 7:48 left. Indiana scored in transition at the 6:50 mark, taking a timeout while facing a 54-47 deficit. The teams traded buckets over the next four possessions before Indiana went on a 12-0 run, halted by Flaherty's triple.
The Wolverines started slow as freshman Hallie Thome picked up two quick fouls in the first minute of the game. U-M slowly chipped away at the Indiana lead, getting within six, 18-12, after 10 minutes.
The Maize and Blue opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run on the strength of a pair of Thompson triples. U-M took a 22-18 lead on a fastbreak layup from sophomore Jillian Dunston at the 6:38 mark to force an Indiana timeout.
The Hoosiers came back to tie the game at 30-30 with 1:16 left in the half, but senior Kelsey Mitchell scored on U-M's final possession and Ristovski took a charge on defense to send U-M to the locker room with a 32-30 lead. Thompson paced the Wolverines with eight points, with Ristovski chipping in seven and Flaherty and freshman Sam Trammel each scoring four. The Maize and Blue shot 52 percent (13-for-25) from the floor in the half.
