ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) to the visiting No. 11-ranked Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday evening (Nov. 11) from Cliff Keen Arena. The loss is Michigan's fourth straight.
The visiting Wisconsin Badgers took the first point of the match on a Michigan service error, and the tone was set from there. In the first set of the night, the Wolverines never led, tying the score three times but eventually falling by a 25-20 score.
After a short break, Michigan returned to the court in the second set to take the first point on a kill from sophomore outside hitter Adeja Lambert. The 1-0 lead was Michigan's last of the match, however, as Wisconsin responded with back-to-back kills to go ahead, 2-1. From there, the Badgers seemingly remained one step ahead of the Maize and Blue, never allowing Michigan to tie the score. Despite three kills apiece from sophomore Caroline Knop and junior Abby Cole, as well as two apiece from sophomore Claire Kieffer-Wright, senior Krystalyn Goode and Lambert, the Wolverines dropped the second set, 25-19.
Trailing by a 2-0 score, Michigan returned in the third set to launch its attack. It was again the Badgers who scored first, garnering an early lead but allowing Michigan to tie it up three times. With an 11-10 score in their favor, Wisconsin then went on a three-point run that forced a Michigan timeout. Following the pause in momentum, the Wolverines again came within two points of the Badgers, but Wisconsin pulled away for a 25-19 set victory and a 3-0 match sweep.
Knop and senior setter Carly Warner both registered double-digit digs in the loss, tallying 10 apiece. From the front row, Kieffer-Wright tallied three block assists while Lambert recorded three solo blocks.
Offensively, Knop led the Maize and Blue in scoring with eight kills on a .231 average, while Warner picked up a team-high 16 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Katherine Mahlke was perfect on the evening, recording one kill on one attempt for a 1.000 hitting percentage.
In a postgame interview, head coach Mark Rosen also noted the leadership of Goode.
"I was really proud of how KG played," Rosen stated. "I thought she played really hard, especially in the second set. I thought she just really ratcheted up her intensity and was just going after it. You could see the team feed off that -- you saw players react really well. I thought she was setting the tone."
Overall, the Wolverines finished the match with a .103 hitting percentage, recording 33 kills on 22 errors, while Wisconsin registered a .295 average on 42 kills with 11 errors.
Michigan will hit the court again on Saturday (Nov. 14) when the Maize and Blue heads to Columbus, Ohio, for a 7 p.m. match against Ohio State. The road match is just one of three that remain of Michigan's schedule this regular season.
