
Four Wolverines Named NFCA Scholar Athletes for 2014-15

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Four members of the University of Michigan softball team earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2014-15 academic year, the organization announced Thursday (Oct. 8). Individual honorees include 2015 graduate Becca Garfinkel, senior Olivia Richvalsky and sophomores Taylor Swearingen and Nikki Wald.
Players named NFCA scholar athletes must have attained a minimum overall grade point average of 3.50 over the fall 2014 and winter 2015 semesters.
The NFCA recognition complete the academic honors for Michigan's decorated 2015 squad. Junior Kelly Christner was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I softball third team, Garfinkel and Richvalsky were named Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholars and seven total Wolverines were named Academic All-Big Ten.
Garfinkel, who graduated last spring with a degree in political science, was the recipient of the team's Leo and Edna Drewett Academic Award, honoring the Wolverine softball player with the top GPA, for the third year in a row. She was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar during her career. Garfinkel is currently in Israel as a participating in the nine-month Yahel Social Change Program.
