STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team allowed three goals in a three-minute span in the first half and eventually dropped a 3-1 decision in its regular-season finale at No. 10 Penn State on Wednesday (Oct. 28) at Jeffrey Field. Senior Cassie Collins found the back of the net in the 88th minute for U-M to spoil PSU's shutout.
Michigan produced several chances early, registering four shots in the first six minutes of play. In the fifth minute, senior Corinne Harris turned her defender inside the box and dribble to the left side of the 18, where she fired a hard left-footed shot that Penn State goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom just got a hand on to tip over the bar.
In the 33rd minute, Penn State took the ball from a Michigan defender and advanced it up the middle of the field to Raquel Rodriguez, who fired a shot from 25 yards out into the bottom left corner of the net to put Penn State up, 1-0 (32:37).
A little more than a minute later, Nittany Lion forward Megan Schafer got in behind Michigan's defense and found herself one on one with U-M goalkeeper Megan Hinz, and Schafer beat her with a low shot inside the right post (33:54).
In the 36th minute, Penn State's Nickolette Driesse was all alone with the ball 30 yards from the goal and booted a shot into the upper right 90 to give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead (35:13).
Shots were 7-6 in Penn State's favor, and the Nittany Lions owned a 3-0 lead at the break. Hinz made three saves in the first 45 minutes.
Sophomore/freshman Sarah Jackson replaced Hinz in goal to start the second half and made one save on a long-range shot from PSU's Ellie Jean, before senior captain Maddie Clarfield came in to close the game for Michigan in goal.
With less than 10 minutes to play, Michigan started getting into Penn State's zone and challenging its back line. The Maize and Blue took five shots in the final 10 minutes. U-M's fifth shot of the second half and 11th of the game made its way past Eckerstrom. Senior Lulu Haidar put a long free kick directly on frame, and Eckerstrom made the initial stop but was unable to corral the ball, and Collins was there to knock in the rebound near the right post with 2:21 remaining in the game (87:39). Haidar was credited with the assist on the goal.
Michigan concludes Big Ten play with a 6-3-2 record and secures fifth place in the final conference standings. As the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, U-M will play No. 4 seed Northwestern in the quarterfinals at noon CST Sunday (Nov. 1) at New Trier High School in Wilmette, Illinois. The Wolverines defeated the Wildcats during the regular season, 1-0, on Oct. 8.
