Wolverines Upended by Minnesota in Kick-Off Consolation Round

AUSTIN, Texas -- Redshirt freshman Davis Crocker won at No. 6 singles, but the University of Michigan men's tennis team fell to Minnesota, 4-1, in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off event on Sunday morning (Jan. 25) at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
The Gophers snagged the doubles point to open the match. Sophomores Kevin Wong and Tyler Gardiner fell, 6-3, in the No. 1 position to Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg. Then senior Alex Petrone and redshirt freshman Alex Knight lost their matchup against the 58th-ranked duo of Felix Corwin and Leandro Toledo, giving Minnesota the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Crocker defeated Eric Frueh, 6-4, 6-3, as the first singles match off the court, and this knotted the score at 1-1. Freshman Runhao Hua was the next Wolverine to finish, and he dropped his match, 7-5, 6-4, to Ruben Weber. Freshman Carter Lin was matched up against 107th-ranked Matic Spec in the No. 5 spot, and he lost, 6-4, 7-5, to give the Gophers the 3-1 lead. Knight faced Jack Hamburg in the No. 2 position, and despite forcing the second set to a tiebreaker, he was defeated, 6-3, 7-6 (2), to clinch the dual-match victory for Minnesota.
The Wolverines return to action on Sunday (Feb. 1) to take on Vanderbilt in Nashville. The match will begin at noon CST.
