
Michigan Sweeps Eagles to Close Out Play at Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) had 17 kills and the University of Michigan volleyball team used a .392 team hitting percentage to sweep Eastern Michigan in the final match of the Michigan Invitational Saturday night (Sept. 20) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-16, 25-12 and 25-17.
Davis hit .389 on the night and added three digs and a service ace. Junior Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) and sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) each had nine kills and no errors for the match. Goode added a pair of solo blocks while Cole had two blocks on the night. Junior Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) led Michigan with 14 digs and classmate Carly Warner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) had 36 assists.
Michigan and Eastern Michigan had 11 ties and four lead changes in set before the Wolverines pulled away late. A Davis kill made it 13-12 and freshman Caroline Knop's (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) termination gave the Wolverines a 15-12 lead. It was 18-14 off a Goode kill and 22-14 with her solo block. Michigan scored the final three points of the set from a Knop kill and service ace and an Eagle attack error.
The Maize and Blue went on a 5-0 run in set two, leading 10-6 after a Cole service ace. Freshman Katherine Mahlke's (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) termination put U-M up 15-9. It was 19-11 after Davis' successful attack and 21-12 off a Cole kill. Cole and freshman Adeja Lambert (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) combined on a block for set points as the Wolverines went to the locker room up 2-0.
Michigan hit .394 in set three and never trailed in earning the sweep. Goode's kill put the Wolverines up 5-1. It was 9-2 after an EMU error and 13-6 off an Eagle set error. Davis' kill made it 17-10 and Goode put Michigan up 21-14 on a termination. Freshman Claire Kieffer-Wright (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) and Davis had back-to-back kills to end the match.
The Wolverines had five service aces and five blocks for the match, while committing just seven attack errors in three sets.
The Wolverines open Big Ten play this Friday night (Sept. 26) at Purdue. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in West Lafayette, Ind.
