Both Phil Di Giuseppe (G, 2A) and Boo Nieves (G, 2A) matched career highs with three points, all coming in the first period. Linemate Luke Moffatt recorded a goal and an assist in the first period.
Di Giuseppe, Nieves and Moffatt each have three game point streaks. Di Giuseppe has recorded six goals in his last six games and has scored in three straight games. Nieves has recorded two assists in each of the last three games, while Moffatt has scored a goal in three straight contests. The line accounted for five of Michigan's 10 goals on the weekend.
Freshman defenseman Kevin Lohan recorded his first career point with an assist on Di Giuseppe's goal at 17:23 of the first period.
Michigan finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play while allowing Michigan State to score on its lone power-play chance of the night. The last time Michigan failed to kill a penalty in a game was on Nov. 29 in a 4-3 win over Ohio State.
In his third straight start, sophomore goaltender Steve Racine made 24 saves on 28 shots and saw his personal three-game winning streak in net snapped.
Michigan had 24 shots blocked in the contest, including 10 in the third period.
U-M has led or been tied after one period of play in 27 of 32 games this season and has outscored opponents, 33-18, in the first period.
With tonight's loss, Michigan is 9-7-2-1 in Big Ten play with 30 points and two games remaining in conference play. U-M needs one point against Minnesota next weekend to clinch third place in the Big Ten standings.
