LEXINGTON, Ky. -- University of Michigan volleyball sophomore middle blocker Abby Cole was named this afternoon (Tuesday, Dec. 9) to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-North Region team. Cole will now be considered for AVCA All-America honors, which will be announced next Wednesday (Dec. 17).
Cole, who was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten Conference team last week, played in all 30 matches for the Maize and Blue, averaging 3.67 kills a set and leading the Wolverines with 103 total blocks. Cole is fourth in the Big Ten in points per set (4.26) and fifth in hitting percentage (.359).
The 2013 Big Ten All-Freshman selection had career highs of 24 kills in both matches against Indiana this season. She also tied a career high with nine blocks in the first meeting vs. the Hoosiers (Sept. 27). The Grand Haven, Mich., native had 23 double-digit kill performances in 2014 and led the Maize and Blue in kills 16 times.
A two-time Big Ten Player of the Week (Oct. 13, Oct. 20) honoree, Cole was named to all-tournament teams at the Arkansas Invitational and the Michigan Invitational. She had 21 kills in three sets in a win over Rutgers (Oct. 17) and 20 kills apiece in matches against Illinois (Nov. 1) and Wisconsin (Nov. 7).
Michigan now has 14 all-region performers in school history (not counting honorable mention). The AVCA changed its all-region teams last year to include five outside/opposite hitters, three middle blockers, two setters, a libero/defensive specialist and three at-large selections.
