Today's game marked the first-ever meeting between these two programs.
The Maize and Blue fired 42.6 percent (23-for-54) from the field, including 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from outside. Despite U-M knocking down 7-of-14 second-half threes (50 percent), it was not enough to match the Highlanders, who shot a blistering 58.7 percent (27-for-46) from the field and 64.7 (11-for-17) from three. Both NJIT numbers are the highest Michigan has surrendered this season.
U-M forced 13 turnovers from NJIT while committing just eight, right on par with the team's season average of 8.9 turnovers per contest.
The Maize and Blue pulled down 10 offensive rebounds on the way to 26 total boards, led by a half-dozen from Caris LeVert. Ricky Doyle had four boards, including a pair on the offensive end, meaning that 18 of his 24 total rebounds this season have come on that end of the floor (75 percent).
Caris LeVert finished with a game-high and career-high 32 points on 11-for-18 shooting (61.1 percent), including sinking 6-of-8 three pointers (75 percent). It marks his first career 30-plus-point effort, and the first by any Wolverine since Tim Hardaway Jr. dropped 30 on Iowa (Feb. 19, 2011).
Spike Albrecht continued his impressive stretch of consecutive assists without a turnover by adding a pair of helpers today, bringing his tally to 19 straight assists without a giveaway.
On the season, Spike Albrecht has recorded 34 assists and five turnovers, which produces a team-leading 6.8:1 turnover-to-assist ratio. Heading into today's game, Albrecht ranked fifth nationally in that category, sporting a tidy 6.4:1 ratio.
Caris LeVert scored 25 of his 32 points in the second half, the most by any Wolverine in any half this season. He scored 15 of Michigan's final 18 points this afternoon and has now led U-M in scoring a team-high four times this season.
Caris LeVert matched his career high and set a new season best with his four steals; he reached his season average of two steals just nine minutes into the contest. As a team, U-M hit its season average exactly, recording six steals.
The Wolverines went with a starting lineup of: Derrick Walton Jr., Zak Irvin, Caris LeVert, Kameron Chatman and Mark Donnal.
