ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team used a five-goal second period to pull away from Ohio State in an 8-3 win on Friday night (Dec. 5) in front of 5,800 fans inside Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines recorded their fourth straight win and sixth in the last seven games, all at Yost.
Andrew Copp and Alex Kile each scored twice on the man advantage, as the Wolverines pushed the game out of reach with four power-play goals in the frame, the first time a Michigan team has scored four power play goals in a period since March 11, 2005 (10-1 win vs. Notre Dame). Tyler Motte added a career-high four assists for the Wolverines, who had seven different players record multiple points on the night.
Leading 2-1 after one period of play, the Wolverines killed an early penalty, as Zach Nagelvoort (12 saves) came up with several key stops, including a right pad save on Anthony Greco's drive from the circle.
Moments after the Michigan penalty expired, Travis Lynch took a feed from Motte and flipped a backhander over the glove of Christian Frey (10 saves) at 4:17 to make it 3-1 Wolverines.
The Wolverines scored on their first power-play chance of the game at 6:39, and Copp scored on a rebound off a Michael Downing drive at 6:39 to make it 4-1, chasing Frey from the net in favor of Matt Tomkins.
A neutral-zone turnover by the Wolverine led to Ohio State's second goal of the night, as Nick Schilkey kept the puck on a 2-on-0 rush, beating Nagelvoort on a breakaway at 11:44.
Copp added his second power-play goal on the night at 11:44 to give the Wolverines a three-goal lead once again. Max Shuart corralled a rebound off a shot from Motte, fed Copp from behind the net, and Copp scored from just above the goal line on a wide angle shot at 11:44.
Michigan put the game out of reach when Ohio State's Nick Oddo was issued a five-minute major and a game misconduct for head butting at 14:20. The Wolverines scored twice on the ensuing power play to put the game out of reach.
Kile scored his nation-leading fifth and sixth power-play goals of the season, scoring at 14:39 on a deflection in front, and at 16:14, putting in his own rebound to put Michigan up 7-2 after two periods of play.
Tony Calderone scored his second goal of the season at 1:11 of the third period on a 2-on-1 feed from Motte to round out the scoring for Michigan, which chased Tomkins (3 saves) from the net with the goal for Logan Davis (5 saves). Greco added a late tally for the Buckeyes at 5:04, as Steve Racine replaced Nagelvoort early in the third period and stopped 11 of 12 shots on net.
The Wolverines fell behind midway through the first period as Matt Johnson scored from along the boards on the left wing, beating Nagelvoort on the far post at 10:04. Zach Hyman scored a little more than two minutes later on a shot the deflected off a mass of players in front of the net and fluttered over the arm of Frey at 12:49.
With the game tied 1-1 late in the period, Zach Werenski scored on a drive from the left point, taking a pass from Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves off a faceoff win from JT Compher and beating Frey with a slapshot at 19:48 to give Michigan its first lead of the game.
The Wolverines will now head east to take on Boston College next Saturday (Dec. 13) in a 7 p.m. contest.
