CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Dylan Larkin scored a third period power play goal, but the University of Michigan hockey team fell, 5-1, at Boston College (NR USA Today/USA Hockey, No. 16 USCHO) Saturday night (Dec. 13) in front of 6,202 fans at Kelley Rink. Michigan outshot BC, 42-29, for the night and had six power-play chances, including three in the third period, but the Wolverines could not overcome a 3-0 first-period deficit.
Larkin cut the BC lead to two with a power-play goal at 3:38 of the third period. Larkin took Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves' pass from the wall and jammed a shot from the side of the net past BC goaltender Thatcher Demko (41 saves) to make it 3-1.
Michigan continued to press, drawing a power play shortly after Larkin's goal as BC's Teddy Doherty was sent off for slashing at 4:16; but BC killed the penalty and iced the game later in the period on Quinn Smith's short-side goal at 12:51. The Wolverines finished the night 1-for-6 on the man advantage while holding BC scoreless on three power-play chances.
With 3:43 remaining, Michigan pulled Zach Nagelvoort (24 saves) from the net for an extra attacker. Smith added an empty-net goal for BC at 18:43, his second of the night.
Despite owning a 15-9 shot advantage and hitting two posts in the opening minutes of the game, the Wolverines found themselves down 3-0 after one period of play. Max Shuart had the game's first good scoring chance, finding himself all alone in front, but he hit the crossbar on his shot from in close. A little more than a minute later, Justin Selman skated in alone on a breakaway but could not get a clean shot off.
Andrew Copp had Michigan's second hit post of the period on a wrist shot from the high slot at the 3:30 mark.
The Eagles were the first team on the scoreboard, using the open ice to their advantage during a 4-on-4. With three Michigan players inside the offensive zone, Doherty took a stretch pass and skated in alone down the left wing. His wrist shot beat Nagelvoort over the shoulder at 5:44 to give Boston College the early lead.
BC took a 2-0 lead at 7:42 as Cam Spiro found Ian McCoshen in the high slot. McCoshen beat Nagelvoort with a hard, low wrist shot.
The Eagles went up 3-0 at 14:03 on Destry Straight's wrist shot from the circle, as Straight took a pass from Michael Matheson and with time and space, beat Nagelvoort high.
Michigan carried the play late in the first period and continued that momentum in the early stages of the second period, with several chances on an early power play and two golden opportunities for JT Compher shortly following the man advantage. Compher received a pass from Nieves on a give-and- go and fired wide from in close. Moments later, Brennan Serville shot wide intentionally, and Compher received the long rebound off the end boards, but his chance was stopped by Demko.
The Wolverines had another great opportunity when Nolan De Jong found Tyler Motte alone at the far blue line for a partial breakaway midway through the second period, but Motte's long wrist shot was stopped by Demko at the 12:15 mark.
Another Michigan scoring chance came and went when Copp skated out from behind the net for a shot on a jam play and the rebound went right to Tony Calderone in the goal mouth. But Calderone's shot was deflected by a BC stick over the net with a little more than 20 seconds to play in the second period, and the Eagles maintained their three-goal lead heading in the third period.
Michigan will have an off weekend before returning to game action on Sunday, Dec. 28, against Michigan Tech at 3:30 p.m. in the opening game of the 50th Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
