Today's game marked the first-ever meeting between these two schools, giving SMU a one-game edge in the all-time series.
U-M matched a season high with 11 steals as a team today, led by three each from Derrick Walton Jr. and Zak Irvin. It also sets a new career high mark for Irvin, who has recorded at least one steal in five of the last six U-M contests.
While SMU averages four scorers in double figures, U-M allowed just two Mustangs to reach double-digit scoring (Yanick Moreira, 19 points; Nic Moore, 17).
The Maize and Blue tallied 12 assists on 17 made field goals (70.5 percent), raising its season tally to 143 helpers on 256 made buckets (55.8 percent).
Mark Donnal found double digits for the first time in his career today, scoring 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting to give him new career highs in points, baskets made and field goal attempts. He also added four rebounds.
Zak Irvin led the way for U-M with his 17 points today and also matched a season high by pulling down five rebounds. His three takeaways also marked a new career best.
Mark Donnal rattled a three-pointer home at 14:56 in the first half and sank another with just 45 seconds to play. Donnal shoots at a 66.7-percent clip (4-of-6) from outside. Overall, Michigan's bigs continue to be efficient from outside. Between Donnal and Max Bielfeldt, U-M bigs are firing triples at a 63.6-percent (7-of-11) rate this season.
Today's game marked the first career start for freshman forward Ricky Doyle.
